EUSTON TRIAL REPORT;
Sunday at Euston was a brilliantly set out course by Denis Jenkins. A great field as we’ve found out so many times before.
Running on 4 Welsh mules..it was evident from the beginning that today was not going to be easy. Fantastic fit sheep but simply not used to being worked in small numbers. A huge test for a dog.
Too much pressure, they would run...not enough, they turned on dogs. It was clear this was going to be a low scoring trial. But credit to those who went out with a positive ‘won’t be beat’ attitude!
I was delighted when Bob Powell put up an 81point run because when judging days like this you need someone to make an example..to show actually it is doable! He was the only person who got it right...there was no lucky packet! A clever handler with a dog that applied just the right amount of pressure.
Many thanks to Euston Estate. And to Chris Reeks for such fit testing shearlings (which are smart sheep for anyone looking to buy replacements).
I had a run at the end just to see if they were as tough as they looked - they were!!! And it made me realise why I had just aquired some very mad, wild training sheep for my dogs... it was for days like this...to condition your handling and dogs for the days when sheep have a mind of their own. That’s trialling!
